Life in lockdown and life without pre-lockdown habits has been difficult for us all. Before lockdown occurred, I was a regular gym-goer to counter the fact that my job, despite giving my brain a workout most days, does not keep me very active with sitting a lot during the day.

That along with the repetitive days, repetitive evenings and repetitive routines of home working meant something needed to change. I knew I needed to do something for myself to keep me focussed through another lockdown and to motivate myself. To find that release of lockdown frustration I needed a plan.

I had invested in some gym equipment during the first lockdown and already had bits and pieces around the house to work with but nothing substantial, and this was the first excuse I had to beat. It was cold, snowing, raining so an outdoor workout was not at the top of my list.

Not having physical activities in my daily routine or a plan of exercises to complete made it easy to do nothing at all. The risk here is that I start to feel bored, low and eventually my mental state would be affected, something I am keen to prevent.

With some help, I first set myself up a weekly plan and weekly goals to achieve. I set a target to hit short term and targets to monitor my progress.

A walk first thing in the morning to get my steps in, clear my head and get myself mentally ready for the working day. I also have a variety of workouts planned throughout the week using household items as a replacement for gym equipment. Who knew a plant pot could have more than one use! To add to this I have a controlled and tracked diet. No more getting through a pack of biscuits in the evening…

Looking back, all my targets were realistic and achievable (something we accountants like to have!). All targets were to help get the best out of me physically which helped me also keep my mental wellbeing in a good place.

I decided to invest my time in myself and make the best out of a bad situation. I’m starting to see the rewards and yes, I’ve felt tired at times. It is difficult going out in the rain first thing in the morning. But I am glad I decided to do it.

My top tips for working out from home;

  • Dedicate time for yourself to workout
  • If you don’t have any equipment, improvise, try cans of soup or water bottles.

To summarise, I have altered my routine while working from home to keep me active which has helped me to keep my mental focus which means I am more productive when I’m working at home. It’s important to have the time for you while working from home to feel like you aren’t working all day every day.
